The Use of Technological Devices in Education
Technologies have captured our lives utterly and completely. Look around! What do you see in overcrowded subway cars, busses, in the streets? There are no people, admiring landscapes or engaged in conversation with each other, these are mainly youngsters, all as one, wrapped up in their electronic devices. Some of them are browsing the Web, others are listening to music. Even children read and learn using their gadgets.
Actually, education is the first sphere where technologies have stricken their roots. But how do students benefit from hi-tech devices and in what way they may suffer from them?
Communication is an essential tool for learning. By means of computer, tablets, smart phones and other devices people have acquired limitless communication opportunities. In education these technologies have also played their role. Students are free to share ideas and information on a certain subject, find experts’ thoughts and get additional instructions or assistance from their teachers. Take Glogster, for example, a learning platform which provides educational content and enables users to create their own projects and share them. Another learning platform is Edmondo. It is special website for students, teachers and parents designed to communicate, study and share knowledge. (Wikipedia.org)
Limitless access to information
Nowadays students don’t know what it is like to spend a day searching for a book in a library. Switch on computer, type the needed information in a search box, press enter and voila – thousands of information sources are at your service. What’s more, all the information found on the Web can be downloaded and saved on pocketbooks or ipads which means no more heavy bags. Besides, many devices play video that make them more alluring to use for educational purposes.
Catering for students’ needs
Once technologies have become an integral part of the learning process, lots of students with special needs got chances to leave normal life and enjoy the same opportunities, which are offered to ordinary students. Thus, distance learning has made it possible for students at home schooling to get quality education. Students with poor language command are now able to improve their skills by using software programs designed to learn a language.
It seems that technologies are all advantages. Still I have to add a spoiled apple to this barrel.
It has been already proven that computers and all devices of this kind produce radiation which in huge doses can do harm to human organism. Children spend nearly all their time at computers or tablets, thus their health is endangered.
Bad quality information
Alongside educational information students may get access to improper data. Even at school with protected system it is quite possible to get on pages with incorrect information.
Unfortunately technologies in education are not always used for studies. Social networks like Facebook and Twitter, available on the majority of devices, tempt students to chat, watch videos and play games straight at school, distracting their attention from learning.
To conclude, much as somebody would like, it is impossible to slow down the development of technological devices in education. Still, it is within our power to make them as efficient and useful as possible.
